To be eligible for a grant from the Life Balance Foundation, the family must have a working mother and be expecting the birth of a child. The working mother’s paid maternity leave must be less than the federally mandated unpaid twelve-week leave. The family must demonstrate a financial need with respect to paying basic living expenses if the full amount on unpaid leave is taken. Basic living expenses include, among other things, housing costs (mortgage, rent, etc..), insurance premiums, utility costs, car loan or lease expenses.
The Foundation will begin accepting applications in Spring 2019. As we get closer to the target date we will announce it. Since it will take a minimum of 60 days to review applications, we recommend applications be submitted no later than the end of the second trimester of the pregnancy. Applicants must submit an application by mail that includes a medical confirmation of the pregnancy, specific financial information which includes W-2s and tax return information, the purpose for which the granted funds are requested including dollar amounts and relevant bills. The applicant will also have to provide a confirmation of the maternity leave policy of the employer of the working mother.
The officers of the Foundation will review all applicants submitted and select recipients and grant amounts based on financial need and necessity of the expenses requested to be covered.
All grant funds will be paid directly to third parties in support of the grant purposes other than the 10% exception described below. The maximum amount of each grant will not exceed the lesser of $15,000 or $5,000 per month of unpaid leave up to a maximum of three months pro-rated. For example, if the working mother is entitled to two weeks of maternity leave, she may receive a maximum of $12,500. The grant amounts will pay basic living expenses as described above. A small amount of the total grant amount not to exceed 10% may be granted directly to the grantee for miscellaneous weekly expenses.
Note: As indicated above, the Foundation is not currently accepting applications
